Acoustic Guitar versus Electric Guitar for Beginners
Entertainment September 16th, 2008Now that you have decided that you want to play the guitar the question that normally follows is whether or not you should start out with an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar. That is very hard to answer if you really don’t have a preference for either. There are a few things to take into consideration when deciding which one would be better for you. Ultimately though, you should start out with an instrument that you enjoy playing the most but if you really aren’t sure, here are some factors to consider.
The first thing you should look at is the ease of play. The electric guitar is considerably easier to play for beginners because the general setup is easier to learn. The strings are closer to the frets and easier to push down when learning chords compared to the acoustic. The pickups and amplifier does most of the work so therefore you don’t need to be as skilled in the beginning to make it sound good. Even with minimal contact with the frets you will still get a clean sound as compared to the acoustic guitar where heavier strings are required.
They are harder to press down to get the same clean sound. Beyond the strings the neck is thinner on an electric guitar, and the body is smaller making it easier for someone younger to hold. The thin neck gives you a good tight grip and allows you to get better finger positioning when you are learning. Then of course you have the more comfortable body which allows for better posture and more relaxation when you play. Another factor to consider is the sound. Many people agree that the sound an acoustic guitar can make is unmatched by the electric guitar.
With its natural vibrations and output there is no loss of sound as there is with an electric guitar with the transfers and pickups. On the other hand many people think the sound of an electric guitar is better because it can enhance the sounds that you are making. Each has different tones and sounds and there is not one that is better than the other. When it comes to sound it really is a personal preference. Price is your final factor to consider. With an acoustic guitar you don’t need any additional equipment.
You simply buy the guitar and you can start playing. You can take it anywhere, making it very convenient, and you don’t have to replace things like cables and amplifiers as you would with an electric guitar. An acoustic guitar is also less expensive to buy. A decent guitar will run around $150 whereas a decent electric guitar and necessary equipment will run at least double that if not more.
You never want to skimp on either though, as a cheap guitar will give you a cheap sound. So buy as much as is affordable to you so that you can have the most enjoyable sound possible. In the end, the only thing that really matters is that you are happy with your purchase. Depending on the type of music you want to play the guitar may vary, but as long as you love it and love playing it then you have made a good purchase.
