I had always wanted to have an outside luau party for my birthday. I was turning forty and knew that no one would ever plan a nice party for me without me asking. I told this to my husband and he said that if I planned the party, he would pretend that he had done it all.

I started by giving him the guest list and purchasing all the Hawaiian stuff that I could find. I knew that we did not want the lights on or all the bugs would carry us away. I got online and found a company that sold deluxe glow sticks and glow paint to paint some of the decorations. I painted a few totem poles and positioned a black light to hit them and they were awesome.

The night of the party, I had to act like I was surprised when I walked out to the party that was on my deck. It got dark that night, very quickly and we had to open the deluxe glow sticks and put them all around to be able to see. The black lights on the totem poles with the glow paint on them were the hit of the party.

Everyone kept telling me how lucky I was to have a husband who cared so much to go out of his way and plan such a great party.
